About the Artist
Born in the suburbs of Edmon, Oklahoma, Sheffield discovered skateboarding and art as teenager, and used both as an escape from the toil of high school.
Artist Statement
Right now, most of my work is inspired by "the good times” from my life. They are paintings of my family and friends, objects, events and places that evoke memories. I like to break down my subjects into different facets by mixing colors. I also get excited about identifying strong figurative details within my paintings because it allows me the opportunity to flatten them into abstract forms that are indicative to the subject as a whole. Though I am still on my professional journey, I have experienced successes along the way. More specifically, this year I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in various juried exhibitions as well as having some of my pieces curated in group exhibitions. Recently, I finished my time at The Cedars Union as a studio artist in the second cohort (Cohort 2) of The Cedars Union Incubator for the Arts which helped me continue to grow within my career. It is definitely not easy being an artist, but I wouldn’t do anything else. You could even say that I can't do anything else- besides teach art, which I do as an adjunct instructor at multiple schools. Most recently, I’ve learned to tell my story and for the first time I feel like I am sharing personal and more intimate narratives with my work. I have also learned to be patient with myself and my work, to give us both the time we need to be the best we can.
