artist statement
I choose subjects for my expressionist works purposely to evoke emotion. "This Is Awkward," and "Step on Me," are the start of a new series studying our empathy with humanized objects such as dolls and animatronic toys. These domestic scenes laced with humor invite the viewer to study and reflect.
"Joachim West as The Most Interesting Man Alive" is my first work in oils in over 25 years. It was Joachim who suggested that I work in oil, and so I thought I would immortalize him with this work. Sunflowers are naturally reminiscent of Van Gogh who painted a portrait of Gauguin with sunflowers. Like Gauguin, Joachim paints and draws strongly symbolic work pregnant with metaphor. For me, the field of sunflowers are natural compliment to Joachim's intensity. |
