Teresa Gómez-Martorell
There are many important issues in Teresa Gómez-Martorell's art work; poetry is one of the most fundamental. The quality of the word by itself is a part of the work and beginning of some ideas for her pieces. Poetry has a surrealistic quality that allows her to play with imaginary worlds and create strange creatures. The idea that unites all of her works is related to installation and the object--including books, small sculptures, and large format prints, she seeks to transmit her personal experiences in a universal language that can be understandable for everybody. She likes to start with the title of a body of work. That phrase, word or paragraph, leads her to develop this idea by searching the materials that fits better with what she needs to say.
She is interested in exploring personal issues that are universal at the same time. This desire to share those personal experiences to make them universal is what pushed her to work on books. She is not interested at all in bookbinding, she just learned the basics, binding her books in a very simple way. Covers are flat and even in color; they are made to simply joint what is inside. Surrealism and automatism are the mental processes that allow her to start with an idea and assist her as she structures a narrative.
Books are mainly made with Japanese paper. Japanese paper is more versatile and the point is to experiment with very delicate papers that would not been adequate for bookbinding. Materials are selected as a part of the narrative. It is interesting to her to glue different kind of papers and to see how they behave: weight transparency, superposition.
Even though she works in printmaking, her idea is the challenge of working depending on the facilities. For many print makers facilities such as a printmaking press or another machinery is more important to achieve a body of work. In some cases, this can be an issue. For her, this can take my art work into another direction; it pushes me to try new materials and techniques for her art work. As an artist, prints, books, drawing, installation are ways to express an idea and develop a body of work, more than being stuck in a technique.
