Tammy McNary
American art photographer, whose expressionist works often depict human emotions and sexuality. Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1965, Tammy now lives and works in Dallas, Texas. The artist attended Southern Methodist University and studied sociology, photography and cinema.
Artist Statement:
“Some of the themes I deal with in my photography include separation, secrecy, sexuality, fragility, fear and resistance. The way I try to address these matters is by using parts of the body as expressive tools. The subjects are removed entirely or they are masked as a means of revealing a lucidity that exists when parts of the body are isolated.
The images appear hazy or unfocussed, sometimes as a result of a camera maneuver and other times from a process of rephotographing existing photographs. In either situation my intent is to diminish the details and retain only that which is necessary. In part, what remains is a reduction of visible reality - a reality that is continually associated with photography."
