Ro2 Art is proud to present Kathy Robinson-Hays and Terry Hays: Side by Side. The exhibition will run from October 16 through November 13, 2021 at Ro2 Art in The Cedars, located at 1501 S. Ervay St, Dallas, TX, 75215. An opening reception will take place Saturday, October 16 from 7-10.
Though each artist arrived at fine art from different paths, art conservation and theatrical scenic design, Kathy Robinson-Hays and Terry Hays both share pattern and a masterful use of color. Repetition of form is explored through delicate and striking ways in the upcoming two-person show, Side by Side. Kathy Robinson-Hays treats acrylic like watercolor, creating diaphanous veils of pigment that float across the surface. The artist’s patterning is formed through organic abstraction with areas where pigment is built-up to a thickness reminiscent of Braille. The works are ethereal, with some forms floating on transparent fabric stretched across wire. Biomorphic marks resembling ferns or spider-webs grow in the eaves of the repeating dots. The delicate interplay of form and material expresses an exquisite calm. Terry Hays creates work from an amalgam of symbols, colors, stylized natural elements that form a chaotic yet harmonious rhythm. Inspired by seafaring cultures from around the world, religion, street art, tattoos, outsider art, and James Hampton’s Throne of the Third Heaven, Hays transforms and combines source imagery into a new visual language. Contrasting colors vibrating with movement crawl across the substrates suggesting animate flora. Meticulously worked designs, surpassing the elaborateness of cloisonné transform the surface into epic narratives of color. Through this new vernacular, Hays seeks to redefine the urban and rural landscapes that surround him. |

Kathy Robinson-Hays is a Canadian born, longtime Texas visual artist and art conservator/restorer. She and her husband, fellow artist Terry Hays, currently live in Duncanville, Texas and have worked side by side in their home studio for years. Kathy has had a lifelong interest in the conservation of objects, leading to her career at Brown Mountain Art Restoration in Dallas as a professional art and antique restorer/conservator specializing in porcelain and ethnographic objects. She received her B.F.A. Honors in painting from the University of Manitoba, and, after studying in Italy and New York, she obtained her M.A. in studio art from the N.Y.U. Venice Study Abroad Program. She has taken courses in Care of Textiles at the Campbell Center of Mount Carroll and The Conservation of Gilt Wood at the Smithsonian Institution. Her work has been included in New American Paintings, Studio Visits Magazine, and she was included in Peripheral Vision Issue 7, Salon 2017, curated by Georgia Erger among others. Her work has also been included in many juried shows and is included in private collections in Canada and the U.S. She is currently represented by Ro2 Art in Dallas.
Terry Hays was born and raised in Texas. He received his B.S. from West Texas State University and his M.F.A. from Texas Christian University. After graduate school, he spent eight years teaching, painting, and drawing at the University of Manitoba School of Art in Canada. Upon his return to Texas, he spent the next 20 years painting sets for stage production and television, but returned his attention to his personal art in 2002. "I would spend endless hours looking at a broad assortment of images from Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, China and Japan," Hays said. His work has evolved to a beautiful hybrid of world art forms influenced by his experiences with set design. Terry Hays is represented by Ro2 Art in Dallas. |
