Sergio Nates

Artist Statement
Unfinished inventories, fragments, objects, sketches and paintings, recorded experiences, stop motions, experiments, …photographs and other spontaneous inventions are the concepts that come to my mind when I think about my work. Each and every one of them gives way to improvisation, where building, hybridization and technology will provoke an acknowledgement or will entice the observer to an adventure into the unknown. My work, though not exclusively based on the scientific, does have heavy scientific, astronomical, astrophysical, celestial, biological, technological, futuristic and stellar overtones. Alluding to the precious images of far distant worlds, universes and galaxies, such as those depicted by the Hubble Space telescope photographs of deep space, depicting literal ghosts of billions of years in the past, my work speaks of distant, elusive, and ambiguous wonders. The distance to the physical world can be measured in gigaparsecs, which are exponentially longer than light years, but there is an innate connection to the human unconsciousness and consciousness that makes it appealing to people who seek an understanding of their inner mind, as well as their own self. Perspective, as defined by optics, is the basis of the viewing experience needed to truly understand and enjoy my work. Like a rogue planet, lost in the confines of our deep galaxy, my work looks differently when viewed from changed angles. To fully appreciate it, a worldly perception similar to that of the entire electromagnetic light spectrum is necessary. My labor is designed for patience, both in its creation as in its admiration. Like the calming rivers of water that define the Chinese spiritual principal of Daoism, in which the flow is the destination, my artistic creations are about the odyssey, not the end of it. Enjoyment lies in the present moment, away from the confines of the analytic mind. Yet, it can also be subjective. Schematic pieces cause the onlooker to move within a space of speculation where, by being aware of an idea, he can interweave his own geographies, routes, and paths to known or imaginary worlds. Markings, scars, scratches and logs unfold before the spectator, made by man or not. Maps that are witnesses of desired or undesired events happen and evolve in an environment that is regenerated at its own will. I reinterpret cartographic thoroughness by imagining spaces unwrapped by fiction to discover, create or reveal geographies that lead us to exact existences. Like the Earth and the universe itself, it is constantly moving and expanding, evolving like a molecule into a multicellular organism, to more complex forms of life, eventually reaching the complexity of an eagle’s eye, a masterpiece of macroevolution. Yet, the changes are so minute they are barely noticeable. Nevertheless, if we look deep enough, like the cross continental subaquatic mountains that constitute the divisions of the plaque tectonics, which are Earth’s very lifeline, we can see every single part of it.

Each project often consists of several pieces on different means grouped around specific topics and meanings. During production, new topics arise and generate the following body of work.
The materials I use are as diverse as the processes required to construct, imagine, conceive, research, and create each piece, but the methodology is consistent and diligent. Although there are always similarities among the projects, as they are linked by ongoing material and formal concerns, they are all unique and, like an eclipsing binary star and the nature of the spacetime continuum, will always be different depending on the day, hour, time, minute, second, person, organism, context, disposition, and state of mind. Come with me, on an unparalleled journey into a new cosmos.
