Press Release

(Dallas, TX)  Ro2 Art is proud to present A Decade Revisited, a solo exhibition of watercolors and works on paper by acclaimed artist Scott Winterrowd. On view from September 6 through October 11, 2025, at Ro2 Art’s Tin District space, this show traces Winterrowd’s evolving relationship with the Southwestern landscape over the past ten years, gathering both new and previously exhibited works that mark significant moments in his artistic journey. Winterrowd’s practice is grounded in close observation and the act of returning again and again to the storied sites of Texas, New Mexico, and the broader Southwest. His paintings distill the light, topography, and atmosphere of these regions into compositions where immediacy and memory are held in delicate balance. Each work in A Decade Revisited becomes a touchstone, offering not only a record of place but a meditation on time, transformation, and the enduring pull of landscape in the American imagination.

About the Artist

Scott Winterrowd is a painter whose luminous watercolors and works on paper reflect a lifelong engagement with landscape and a deep reverence for place. Over more than twenty years, he has developed a singular body of work rooted in direct observation, travel, and the traditions of American landscape painting. Winterrowd’s compositions draw from personal journeys across Texas and the American Southwest, and are informed by an ongoing dialogue with early twentieth-century painters who first captured these storied regions.
His practice is marked by an exploration of both immediacy and memory, often painting en plein air, and later refining pieces in the studio with an eye toward mood, light, and formal innovation. Winterrowd’s deft handling of watercolor and ink demonstrates a mastery of process: layering washes, leaving fine lines of paper untouched, and building complex harmonies of color and tone. His paintings have been exhibited widely throughout Texas and California, and are held in private collections across the country.
In addition to his studio practice, Winterrowd has made significant contributions as an arts educator and museum professional. He has held positions at the Amon Carter Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, Meadows Museum at SMU, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and is currently Director of the Sid Richardson Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Born in Fort Worth, Winterrowd continues to live and work in North Texas.

show statement

A Decade Revisited charts the arc of Scott Winterrowd’s painterly investigations over the past ten years. The exhibition brings together works created in situ, often sketched first in a single, direct sitting as well as pieces that have emerged through more extended processes in the studio, evolving from sketchbooks, photographs, and remembered experience. These paintings record Winterrowd’s repeated pilgrimages to sites such as the Big Bend region, the karst formations of Colorado Bend State Park, and the sacred landscapes of New Mexico, where ancestral marks and geological phenomena converge.
Throughout the exhibition, viewers encounter landscapes rendered with Winterrowd’s characteristic blend of realism and abstraction. His watercolors and ink drawings are informed by a deep knowledge of both art history and the physical properties of the medium, resulting in compositions where looseness and structure coexist. The show invites reflection on the subtle transformations wrought by time — on land, in mood, and within the artist’s own evolving perspective.
