Sarah Atlee

Bio

Sarah Atlee is an Austin, Texas based painter focusing on contemporary still life and abstract paintings.

A self-described “paint-slinging, steak-chewing, kombucha-sipping, sushi-chomping, yoga-pantsing, sketchbook-doodling visual artist” Sarah was born in Norman, Oklahoma and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she remained until receiving her Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting at the University of New Mexico. In 2006, Sarah received her Masters of Fine Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After graduating she returned to Oklahoma where she became immersed in the regional art scene. Mounting numerous solo exhibitions and being invited to participate in several invitational exhibitions and juried shows. This is her first solo exhibition since relocating to Texas.

Artist statement

Sarah Atlee's geometric abstractions in paint and paper are infused with the play between spontaneity and perfection. "I am increasingly influenced by modern quiltmaking, balancing the dual impulses of precision and improvisation - making perfect versus making do." She explores the pure pleasure of placing color next to color, building a composition one stroke (or stitch) at a time, and honoring artisans of the past and present by building on tradition. Atlee paints and sews without an alarm clock in her Austin, TX studio. Visitors are always welcome at sarahatlee.com.
