Sangmi Yoo
In her decade-spanning practice, Korean native, Sangmi Yoo has explored her interest in ideal home through prints and installation. Her creative activity features a Denbo Fellowship at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, a Wolhee Choe Memorial Award from AHL Foundation in New York, a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant, exhibitions at Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, the American University Museum in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Printing History in Houston and Bellevue Art Museum, and museum collections at the Art Bank of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea and the Springfield Art Museum.
Artist Statement
My idea is based on iconic images that are created through personal memory, simulating the perception and memory from a collective experience. I have developed an interest in tract homes combined with my memory of Korean New Village houses from 1970s, using the format of constructed paper panels, laser-cuts felts and various digital and traditional printmaking techniques. The play of shadows, colored stripes in this work are developed from Dazzle (disruptive) camouflage patterns used in war ships during World War I. By means of these choices, I look for creating a sense of fragility in memories and in illusions of the world we believe. The juxtaposed patterns and overlayed paper cuts create optical illusions through distortions of the original houses, which compares the notion of ideal home as a tangible subject to illusion.
