Ryder Richards
Ryder Richards, born in September of 1977, grew up in Roswell, New Mexico. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Texas Tech University with a minor in drawing and architecture. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting on a scholarship from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Ryder has studied art throughout the United States and in Italy, Spain, and Germany.
After opening and running two alternative art venues in Lubbock, Texas Richards became an Instructor and the Gallery Coordinator for Richland College in Dallas, Texas. The gallery has received regional press attention as an experimental arts venue providing space for burgeoning artists exploring non-commercial concepts.
Richards is co-founder of the Ryder Jon Piotrs Nomadic Gallery, a traveling art gallery in the form of a 24’ Ryder moving truck, and Culture Laboratory, a collective of 12 American artists spread across the U.S. interested in the exchange of ideas and the social development of art in the 21st century. Both collaborations have spurred creative, social programming leading to Richards more recent conversations with Trust Art in Brooklyn, NY.
Known for his artistic collaborations, Richards continues to explore art through object making and art as social experience. He is the recipient of several scholarships and awards for his achievements in art, including residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Vermont; Hilmsen, Germany; Paducah, Kentucky and Portales, New Mexico.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In 1906 William James, a pacifist, makes this observation: “the possibility of violent death [is] the soul of all romance.”
This romance of the South West has been closely tied to my personal history. Here, a portrayal of strength and civic nationalism is paramount, as is a respect for violence as a historical proving ground. Within this 'Culture of Honor,' manhood is developed through emulation and one’s salvation is earned through action. Portions of my work are an investigation of the perception of power within such societal structures.
Incorporating organic pattern as a seductive element in the work allows me to disrupt socialized icons of violence, providing a visual ‘teme’ that compounds interpretation. Concerned with the fragmentation of identity and politics of the void, I am utilizing the symbolic patterning to explore more abstracted notions of power and sociology.
Travel and participation in collaborative art groups has allowed me to further refine the form and content of my art through continual peer review and discourse. The expansion of ideologies through community creates a counterpoint to my personal nostalgia, requiring a constant reconsideration of importance.
Or a more brief statement....
My work is centrally concerned with the embodiment of power and masculinity. I work within ideas of balance, restraint, acceptance and memory as I explore the systems within society.
