Rachel Muldez
Evolution is all things taking part in the changing aesthetic of the created. The further the change the more fantastical the outcome. I take part in that change, in a basic sense, every time I leave a footprint or move a rock. My practice, like every physical action, becomes a change in the physical aesthetic of what I see around me. I am drawn to materials with the potential of life such as seeds, sprouts, cocoons, and nests. As I take my daily walk, after meditation, I look closely at the world around me and wonder about other worlds. The objects I collect end up in piles in my studio and await re-examination. It is not uncommon for me to observe and admire an object for years before I am aware of its full aesthetic potential. The sculptures that come of this process resonate with my evolving understanding of our world and the study of other worlds, galaxies, and nebulas. Fantastical worlds are created both by my hand, and also in the viewer’s imagination as each visually navigates the compositions I have prepared for them. The natural materials I use often already look otherworldly. Objects made by beings other than humans, like nests and cocoons, further impress upon me a higher level of craftsmanship which I seek to achieve. This constant reference back to nature in my work, is due to casual nature walks both in and out of urban settings. I am a professional nature walker and I believe nature is fine art.
