r. mateo diago
Born in Puerto Rico, robert mateo diago has lived in Northern New Jersey, NYC and South Florida. He’s called Dallas, Texas home for 15 years.
Robert has been a student of art since his early childhood, and by high school knew he’d pursue it as a career, both fine and commercial art. He received his Advertising Design degree from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.
For twenty years Robert went through the paces working his way from graphic designer to art director to creative director, using that time to also sharpen all his skills, not only design. Color theory is color theory. Composition is composition. Balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis; all the principles apply in both print design and art. About ten years ago painting reentered his life – emerging as an almost primal need during a meditation retreat. Since then he’s been creating personal and commissioned pieces. This year marks the significant and official switch into art as a fulltime endeavor.
Robert gladly suffers from a desire to want, have, know and try a little of bit everything. In fact, ‘De Todo Un Poco’ (A little bit of everything) is tattooed on his back along with other personal reminders. A self-described artist, designer, writer and all-around-creative-type, he practices meditation, as well as yoga and radical responsibility. A proponent of ‘green’ living he built a sustainable USGBC LEED Platinum certified home (greenlabron.com) and enjoys working with recycled and reclaimed materials.
In addition to painting he works with assemblage, photography, typography and journaling. His graphic arts background, identification as a love addict and spiritual nature are often apparent in his work. He keeps busy with personal projects like his current Caged series, recently successfully presented his first two solo shows, home•less•bound•ness and junk drawer© and is currently working on a new series every then… and now© as well as a retool of home•less•bound•ness to be presented in Dallas as a 3-artist show at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary.
