Peggy Epner

Artist Statement:



Remember when you could fly? 

Before body to push. 
beyond gravity’s pull? 
Oh once more to float, 
like a boat, 
upon the ancient sky. 
 
 
I’m interested in time, as it relates to and connects human souls. I’m curious about our collective, unconscious, ancestral memory. I’m fascinated by our mythologies about where our soul selves travel to when our time here is done.  
 
My work is the result of reflection on the universal questions: Where are we from. Where are we going? Is the answer to both questions the same? Metaphor and a surrealist sense for narrative help me to navigate something that cannot be seen, cannot be known, but which can, just sometimes, very faintly, be sensed. 
 
My work is made slowly, quietly, often with a repetition that can be quite meditative.  More and more, I find myself employing techniques and hand processes that, up until our age of automation, were wide in use for countless generations. 
 
I appreciate objects that have some age, that show the years of use by human hands, and that were made by human hands. When I incorporate such objects into my work, I feel a connection across time between my hands and those many hands before me.

Bio

Peggy Epner, a native of Akron, Ohio, studied fine art at the University of North Texas
School of Visual Arts and Design. Previously, Epner was a theatrical costumer and
holds a BA in Fashion Design from Kent State University. She resides and works in
Allen, TX.
Epner’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions in Texas and throughout
the US, most recently the Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, LA and the Amarillo Museum
of Art, Amarillo, TX, and Stephen F Austin University, Nacogdoches, TX. She has had
several solo exhibitions, including at Laura Moore Fine Arts, McKinney, TX,
Gallery@1300, Dallas, TX, Kilgore College, Kilgore, TX, and the Forest Heritage
Museum, Beavers Bend State Park, OK. Epner’s work is included in the permanent
collections of Jesuit Dallas Museum, Dallas, TX and the Forest Heritage Museum,
Beavers Bend, OK.
