Artist Statement:
"Every time you masturbate…God kills a kitten". This popular caption from meme culture beautifully satirizes the cautionary old wives' tales warning children not to express their sexuality. The story of Onan who "spilled his seed" from the Book of Genesis Chapter 38 has historically been taken out of context and misinterpreted as a condemnation of masturbation. Calling on the quaint titillations found in the Sculptoscope at the turn of the century and constructed from part of an old Church of Christ pulpit, Onan's Box playfully pokes fun at our hangup and our hereditary shame.
