Paper City ART NOTES - "Two of Texas’ best talent scouts are Susan Roth Romans and her son, Jordan Roth, who own and curate Ro2 Art, with locations in the Cedars and downtown. This month, the pair gets kudos for discovering an overlooked mid-career painter whose haunting abstractions conjure plant life and an emerging Asian-American whose trajectory has collectors from Texas to Shanghai vying for his post-Pop canvases. First up, Dallas artist Jeanne Neal solos at Ro2 downtown, with a body of work that transcends continents, movements, and artistic inspirations. Neal writes in her artist statement that her canvases “imply recognizable images that refer to Steam Punk, Goya, Bosch, 19th-century floral still life, or imagined but fully articulated objects and places” (through June 19). A week later, again at Ro2 downtown, Roth Romans curates the topical “Visible: Asian and AAPI Artists in America” (June 26 - July 24). Confirmed participants include recent University of North Texas grad Loc Huynh (whose visually arresting paintings spun around the Asian-American experience are slated for a group show this month, “The Sitter” at Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio) alongside Eliza Au, Jihye Han, Suguru Hiraide, Bumin Kim (whose combable canvases are enchanting), Yeonsoo Kim, Kevin Kwon, Shua Kwon, Yuni Lee, Yasuyo Maruyama, and Narong Tintamusik . . . Besides his role as gallerist, Roth serves as MAC board president. Catch the MAC’s must-see show, “Finding Our Way: Mary Margaret Hansen and Patsy Cravens,” an extraordinary photographic feminist narrative from the 1980s (extended, through June 12)." Catherine D.
