Mary Jo Karimnia’s geometric mixed media radiates with vibrant colors that generate feelings of love and loss. She alludes to the tradition of tarot cards to symbolize taking chances regardless of your own fears. Her works are made through tiny glass beads creating an overwhelming sense of mystery that is emblematic of the journey of relationships. Mary Jo Karimnia’s beautiful artistic portrayal of life’s ambiguities is filled with sensations represented by the inevitable disintegration and faltering of the cups. |

ARTIST STATEMENT
|
“Cups are Emotion” references the practice of using tarot cards. In a traditional deck of cards, Cups are represented by the suit of Hearts. Cups (or goblets or vessels or chalices) examine emotions, feelings, relationships and love. A cups card in reverse, or upside down, can indicate difficulty, dysfunction or blockage. Cups, as vessels, can spill their contents, making things messy. The practice of origami also has a tradition of simple cup making. Cups made of paper are temporary and vulnerable, since any liquid poured within them can ultimately destroy them. Our ordinary lives are filled with mysterious vulnerabilities. Just like tarot cards, relationships are fraught with chance and true understanding is often shrouded in mystery.
