Lynné Bowman Cravens
Lynné Bowman Cravens was born and raised in Austin, Texas. She was introduced to photography around the age of 12 and began to explore film photography on her own.
While at St. Edward’s University, Cravens developed photography skills in analog darkroom, studio lighting, analog color photography, digital photography, digital printing, and conceptual photography. Here is where she developed a strong photographic foundation and began to develop her portfolio. Cravens received her BA in Photocommunications from St. Edward’s University in 2009.
During graduate school, Cravens discovered her voice and artistic style. She previously worked in traditional photography techniques; however she expanded her ideas to include other media utilizing her understanding of photography. Cravens began to make sculptural photographic objects. Her current work is a mixture between traditional techniques and an exploration of other media. Cravens received her MFA in Photography at the University of North Texas in 2015.
Cravens currently resides in Fort Worth, working as the Gallery Manager at Fort Worth Contemporary Arts. She has also worked as a Photography Professor in the DFW area. Cravens is a member of the artist run co-op 500X Gallery, and was published in the British Origami Society’s June 2016 issue.
Artist Statement
Lynné Bowman Cravens is a fine art photographer working in an interdisciplinary method. Cravens takes a wide range of approaches in her artwork as a response to her autobiographical narrative. The work is poetic and expressive, revealing a glimpse into her desires through contemporary self-portraiture. Each piece and series ranges from large-scale digital installations to delicate one of a kind objects. She works primarily with photography, making unique pieces from an infinitely reproducible medium. Through physical manipulations, Cravens creates pieces that interpret her experiences and present them to her viewers.
The pieces in Cravens’ body of work revolve around her autobiographical narrative. Pieces such as Self-Portrait Origami Tessellations and Scrutinize address emotional stress and anxiety through the folding of photographic images. While Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma and Portrait of a Woman utilize fabric layers and multiples to convey their ideas. The use of multiples can be seen throughout her work, drawing focus to repeating objects and showing the differences between similar imagery. Through these explorations Cravens recounts pivotal moments in her life, uncovering her identity in the process.
