Ro2 Art is proud to bring together two painters who aren't afraid to lay it on thick! ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Erica Stephens is an interdisciplinary artist that works with a focus on painting and installation art. From a young age she knew she wanted to become a teacher, but struggled to choose between studying art or literature. Eventually, she decided to keep her love of literature a private affair, and opted to study art at the University of Texas at Dallas. During her undergraduate studies she won the Bryce and Jonelle Jordan Scholarship for Excellence in the Arts was a founding member of The Oh6 Collective.
She completed her MFA at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California, where she was granted both the First and the Second Year Graduate Scholarships and was elected by her cohorts as the Class Marshal of the Otis MFA Class of 2007. During her time at Otis she returned to her passion for literature and regularly attended Graduate Writing lectures to hear visiting authors speak about their work.
Erica returned to Dallas in 2009 and began teaching art courses at various colleges in the area. She currently teaches Art Appreciation courses at Eastifeld College, and takes great joy in teaching students with limited art background how to approach looking at and thinking about works of art
Julon Pinkston first began his studio practice in college after serving as an Infantry soldier in the US Army. It was as a result of the military experience and experiencing personal loss that spurred him into taking the bold move and practicing studio art as a career, embracing an Army motto Fortuna Favet Fortibus (Fortune Favors the Bold).
Julon Pinkston earned a BFA, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Houston in 2003. He went on to earn an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Texas, College of Visual Art and Design in 2008. After graduating he moved home to Houston and began teaching as an adjunct professor at various community colleges and working as an art teacher at Houston Independent School District. His work has been exhibited in various art fairs, featured at Houston’s Art Car Museum, the Beeville Art Museum, McMurtrey Gallery, and Zoya Tommy Contemporary Galley, where he is currently represented in Houston.
In his current work he creates impasto paintings along with paint made to look and feel like ubiquitous objects relating to his studio practice like duct tape, plywood, red stickers using acrylic paint as a medium. His work explores the transformity of acrylic painting as a media while maintaining a seductive, elegant quality.
All works will be on view September 13 through October 12, 2014. Please join us for the opening reception Saturday, September 13 from 7 to 10pm at Ro2 Art Downtown, located at 110 North Akard Street in Downtown, Dallas.
