Press Release

(Dallas) Ro2 Art is proud to present Interstitial Spaces, an exhibition by artist Lisa Horlander. In Interstitial Spaces, Horlander invites viewers into the silent intervals of nature—spaces between branches, under roots, and within the layered transitions of time. Working across drawing, painting, and printmaking, the artist distills the delicate interplay of light and void, forming compositions that speak to both ecological resilience and emotional terrain.
Using ephemeral color palettes drawn from fleeting moments—dusk, dawn, changing seasons—Lisa Horlander captures the atmospheric shifts that often pass unnoticed. These images are then transformed into polymorphic sculptural forms that mimic the negative space in natural systems, challenging the viewer’s understanding of what is form and what is absence.
Set against the backdrop of urban development, the works become metaphors for the human condition—how we survive, adapt, and find beauty in spaces that feel overlooked or in-between. Interstitial Spaces is a meditation on fragility and strength, presence and absence, growth and decay.

exhibition statement

“My work explores intervals in space and time with an emphasis on visual negative space. I portray visual contours between tree branches and roots, while using ephemeral colors from transitions in time, in the imagery I capture on paper using an array of drawing, printmaking, and painting techniques. I manipulate those surfaces to create polymorphic forms shaped to mimic the visual negative spaces I reference in my 2D imagery. The imagery in my work focuses on the natural ecosystems surviving within urban development in my nearby surroundings, where I see metaphors for human experiences within the survival and devastation of those ecosystems. I am interested in portraying the visual contours between tree branches and roots, along with using ephemeral colors from transitions in time and seasons, in the imagery I capture on paper.”
