About the Artist
Historical artist Lillian Young attended Texas Christian University where she received her BFA in Studio Art and an emphasis in Art Education. She has always had a passion for history and growing up her family made sure that she was well educated about the struggles, victories, and heroes in Black history.
Often history may seem irrelevant but has consequences in how we understand and react to current events. Lillian depicts forgotten or not well known moments from the Black experience, focusing on lesser known black leaders, stories, events and objects that are commonly known by the black communities, but unknown by the general public. In highlighting these moments, Lillian works to make a connection to the social anxiety felt today from the rise in racism, loss of representation, and her own struggle of continuing to fight for equality.
Currently she works at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth Texas, and plans to attend Grad school at Michigan State University in the Fall of 2019.

Artist Statement
In American history, there are many stories that have not been told and the significant stories have different meanings for the people. Growing up, my family made sure to tell me about moments in Black history that my school neglected to teach me about. As I got older, I started to realize that the American history that I grew up knowing was not matching what my peers knew. In my art I want to create visual timeline that shows American history through a Black cultural and history lens.

My painting, Basic Rights, is a representation of how I feel the nation is towards the concept of rights in regards to the treatment of minority groups. As more people suffer from police brutality and the rise in racism, there are more days where it seems like the rights and liberties that this nation was built upon are being ignored and tossed in the garbage.
Two print displays are from an ongoing project of mine called “Can U See Her”. The main goal of this project is to get the names, faces, and legacies of Black women who contributed greatly in the fight for civil rights. Fundi is a portrait of Ella Baker, whose activism helped not only the NAACP but was pivotal in the creation of SNCC, Students Nonviolent Coordination Committee. During her work with SNCC, Baker was nicknamed “Fundi”, which is Swahili for “a person who teaches a craft to the next generation.”

The smaller of the two prints, Mamie Till- Mobley, is of the mother of Emmitt Till. Emmitt was a 14 year old boy from Chicago who was brutally beaten and murdered in Mississippi in 1956. After Emmitt’s death, Mamie demanded that his funeral be open casket, showing the world what they did to her son and went on to becoming an activist for Children and Civil Rights.
