Leah Flook
(b.1993) Leah is a Dallas based interdisciplinary artist who primarily works in digital media and sculpture. Her most recent studies explore the relationship dynamics between the hunter, hunted, and the “trickster.” She investigates cat and mouse scenarios through the lense of classic horror films and slapstick comedies. In her work domestic spaces transform into lively arenas or mazes where battles ensue. She holds a BFA in sculpture and painting from University of North Texas and is now pursuing her MFA at Southern Methodist University.
Artist Statement
I’m currently studying memetics carried from mythology, religion, and folklore to modern day culture and information. Generally, I’m intrigued with the similarities of symbols used within myth and how these became culturally embedded and repeated. I am especially interested in myth related to the afterlife and paranormal. I use my studies as an investigation into my own personal happenings. In this way, I’m beginning the process of collecting evidence. In my work animals act as symbols and windows are made wormholes for viewing different planes. I create gateways and barriers where I am free to explore safely.
