krista chalkley: a thin place
April 17 - May 15, 2021
Press Release
Ro2 Art is proud to present a thin place, a solo exhibition featuring new works by artist Krista Chalkley. The show will run from April 17 through May 15, 2021. The exhibition will open with a reception at Ro2 Art the Cedars located at 1501 S Ervay St, Dallas, TX and will take place from 12-5 PM.
Through transparent textiles and voids, Krista Chalkley creates passageways to spaces where malice is replaced with reverence. a thin place is in reference to a mysterious realm found in ancient Irish folklore, geographic areas where the veil between realities is thin. This “thinness” holds for latent possibilities of ways to relate to each other beyond past and current sociopolitical strife. Softness in texture and hue are aesthetic critiques of rigid thinking. Layers and gradations act as subtle metaphors for the fluidity of gender and the social construction of identity. Through meticulously worked pellucid fibers, Chalkley creates portals to invite viewers into this realm of potential. |
artist statement
My work depicts a universe that is beautifully, gleefully fluid. It celebrates the inbetween, the unusual, the flawed, and the authentic. Bigotry, judgment, and selfconsciousness are non-existent. All that matters in this universe is the diverse identities of its inhabitants and the connections between them. Influenced by the collage medium’s potential to present the multiplicity of truth and perspective within a single plane, my work reflects the complexity of existence. The use of transparent media and my intentional exposed evidence of process are tributes to sincerity. The materials’ ephemeral qualities resemble the innate ambiguity and fragility that exists in humanness, and their tactility incites our own yearning for touch. Through my work, I honor individuality and depict a world that I wish to see– full of tender empathy and with its heart on its sleeve.
