BIOGRAPHY
Krista Chalkley (they/them, b. 1994) is an artist and arts professional based in Dallas, TX. Although their practice is multidisciplinary, it has deep roots in fibers and installation. Conjuring themes of emotion, interconnection, and queerness, their work explores the expansive possibilities of our existence on an individual and collective level. Through sentimentalism, surrealist imagery, and elements of the ethereal, the artist relates such expansiveness with the breadth of the natural and supernatural world. Krista received a BA in Visual Arts from The University of Texas at Dallas in 2018. Since graduating, their work has been exhibited at several local venues such as Ro2 Art, Arts Fort Worth, and at the AT&T Showcase gallery in the Downtown Discovery District, where their work was shown alongside some of AT&T’s corporate collection including artists like Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Kehinde Wiley, and others. In 2022, Krista received the Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Fund award through the Dallas Museum of Art. In addition to being an artist, Krista has worked throughout their career to facilitate curation, programming, and community building for several museums, galleries, and arts organizations in Dallas. In 2019, The Dallas Design District recognized Krista for these efforts and granted them the annual
Young Apprentice Award. Currently, Krista serves on committees benefitting the Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas and the Emergency Artists’ Support League, and works at Erin Cluley Gallery as the Assistant Director and Manager of Operations.
STATEMENT
My work depicts a universe that is beautifully, gleefully fluid. It celebrates the in-between, the unusual, the flawed, and the authentic. Bigotry, judgment, and self-consciousness are non-existent. All that matters in this universe is the diverse identities of its inhabitants and the connections between them. Influenced by the collage medium’s potential to present the multiplicity of truth and perspective within a single plane, my work reflects the complexity of existence. The use of transparent media and my intentional exposed evidence of process are tributes to sincerity. The materials’ ephemeral qualities resemble the innate ambiguity and fragility that exists in humanness, and their tactility incites our own yearning for touch. Through my work, I honor individuality and depict a world that I wish to see– full of tender empathy and with its heart on its sleeve.
