Kimberly Alexander
About the artist
Kimberly Alexander is a self-taught painter. She learned to love art through books, and, with an education in philosophy, literature, and art history, books have become her reliable studio companions. "As an orphaned daughter of an orphan (long story), mortality is an underlying theme in my work. My trips to Haiti, with its Vodou notions of death, defiance, and joy, have helped me to transfer internal perplexities into my work. Haitian paintings are truth that holds a mirror. I sorely needed them and I hope others will explore the creative wealth of Haiti."

artist statement
I love the modesty and quiet persistence of paintings and books. I think it's wonderful to try very hard to make a painting or a book, a thing that is both rare and common, like each of us. My work says that I am alive and I made something that helps me. I'm sharing that with you.
