Press Release

(Dallas) Ro2 Art is proud to present an exhibition by artist Kathryn Gohmert. The exhibition will open July 12, 2025 and remain on view through August 16, at Ro2 Art Gallery, located at 2606 Bataan St., Dallas, TX, with an opening reception to be held July 12, from 7-10 pm.

In Loculos Timoris - Latin for "pockets of fear" - Texas-born, Germany-based artist Kathryn Gohmert explores what it means to live courageously in a world increasingly governed by anxiety and division. Through this focused series of paintings, she investigates the mental landscapes we inhabit when navigating fear, and what it takes to carve out empathy, curiosity, and connection amid disorientation. Drawing from research in cognitive science and her own experiences with temporary blindness, Gohmert offers a visual meditation on how fear warps perception - how the brain prioritizes threat, clings to division, and struggles to decipher what is truly real. Yet within this tension lies the exquisite potential to choose another way.

Gohmert's paintings function as studies of the stimuli by which we experience the world, stripping complex neurological processes to their essential components. Inspired by medical diagrams and systems of notation, her canvases reduce and reassemble perception into a language both intimate and structural. Symbols create their own code as they point out roots and causes, mimicking the brain's own process of sense-making on canvas. These works hold space for both the vulnerability of sensing and the resilience of meaning-making - diagrams of survival that trace new neural paths toward collective imagination and intentional connection in a culture that rewards suspicion.

About the Artist

Kathryn Gohmert was born in Texas in 1983. After receiving a BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007, she lived in Shanghai from 2008 - 2013, where she realized numerous projects and exhibitions, receiving various awards and project grants. In 2014 she moved to Berlin, and in 2017 founded the artist collective Gonzomechanics. In 2019 she received an MFA in "Public Art & New Artistic Strategies" from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, where she leads a yearly writing course. She currently lives and works in Berlin and Weimar with projects divided between Germany, China and the U.S.

Gohmert's interdisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, sound instruments, and performance, all unified by her investigation into moments of connection and interaction with the outside world. Her work has been exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions including recent shows at Galerie Eigenheim in Weimar and notable group exhibitions at venues ranging from the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin to galleries across Shanghai, Dallas, and beyond.

artist statement

Gohmert's work focuses on initiating and marking moments of connection and interaction with the outside world. Of particular interest are interactions related to the brain. Painted experiences are chartered with symbols and words, celebrating form for its own sake rather than literal meaning.
After being affected by temporary blindness, memory and mapping the brain's processes have become increasingly important for the artist. Her work therefore seeks to highlight the power the mind plays in forming reality.

Her installations, sound instruments and objects draw individuals into intentional focus in the present. Her objects often lead viewers to a moment of connection, with many of her works incomplete until activated by a participant. The artist believes art can potentially change the world through its ability to invoke empathy by creating new experiences.
