Kathryn gohmert
about the artist
Kathryn Gohmert’s work focuses on initiating and marking moments of connection and interaction with the outside world. Of particular interest are interactions related to the brain. Painted experiences are chartered with symbols and words, celebrating form for its own sake rather than literal meaning. After being affected by temporary blindness, memory and mapping the brain’s processes have become increasingly important for the artist. Her work therefore seeks to highlight the power the mind plays in forming reality. Her installations, sound instruments and objects draw individuals into intentional focus in the present. Her objects often lead viewers to a moment of connection, with many of her works incomplete until activated by a participant. Kathryn Gohmert was born in the U.S. in 1983. After receiving a BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007, she lived in Shanghai from 2008 - 2013, where she realized numerous projects and exhibitions, receiving various awards and project grants. In 2014 she moved to Berlin, and in 2017 founded the artist collective Gonzomechanics. In 2019 she received an MFA in "Public Art & New Artistic Strategies" from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. She currently lives and works in Berlin and Weimar with projects divided between Germany, China and the U.S.
