Kathleen Janvier

Kathleen Janvier lives in Irving, Texas and teaches at Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch and University of Texas in Arlington. She received her MFA in Metalsmithing in 2013 from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BFA in Jewelry/Metals and AB in English in 2008 at The University of Georgia. Janvier is a 2009 Wingate Fellow, who spent her fellowship year interning with seven prominent jewelers in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her work exploring the thinness of loss and the vulnerability of permanence has been shown nationally and internationally with publication in Metalsmith’s 2015 Exhibition in Print and inclusion in Schmuck 2017 in Munich, Germany. She is currently co-curating a traveling exhibition of conceptual jewelry and metalsmithing titled Not-So-Lone Star Studios: A Gathering of Texas Makers, which will debut at Brookhaven College in August.

Artist Statement

Awkward Exchange – Kathleen Janvier

Objects “insistently [occupy] spaces in between people, creating situations of engagement and articulation, as well as moments of awkwardness and estrangement.”
-Patricia C. Phillips
Executive Editor and Writer for Art Journal

This series of objects inhabits the space of social conversation in hopes of drawing a bridge somewhere between paralyzing self-consciousness and our desire for intimacy. By manipulating the basic conditions of jewelry (size, wearability, intimacy, sensuality) each piece brings the viewer into the personal and psychological space of its wearer, while the emotional transparency of the work serves as a catalyst for human connection. Both the shape and imagery of the brooches plays into this function. With forms reminiscent of dialogue bubbles the pieces encourage literal conversations between viewer and wearer. Just as illustrations of the sweet yet awkward discovery of sexuality promote a sense of shared social discomfiture and an exposed need for human relationship. The reserved use of color in the brooches (flesh tones on the front, muted pastels and greys on the back) relate them more to the physical body and give them a sense of playful sophistication, which is continued in the line quality of the images and settings.
