about the artist
Karla Areli Hernandez Rangel was born in Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo, Mexico and was raised in Dallas, TX. In 2008, she graduated from Richardson High School early, with honors, and then continued her studies at Richland College. After being awarded an Associates in Arts with an emphasis in visual arts degree in May 2011, she transferred to the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Missouri to join the Painting department headed by mentor Warren Rosser. Karla’s work developed rapidly, propelling her to be nominated to represent the school for the Yale Summer School of Art in Norfolk, Connecticut, a sixweek residency headed by Samuel Messer. She applied and was accepted into the group of 23 students that were awarded this honor, out of the 1600 applicants. Yale was an environment where students from all over the world came together to engage in critical dialogue and to challenge and experiment with their combined skill sets. She then returned to KCAI for her final semester, where she graduated December 2013 with a B.F.A. double major in Painting and Art History. Karla currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas
