Joel Kiser
Statement
My work is about telling stories.
Over the last 10 years I have created an extensive mold vocabulary from which I harvest, reconfigure, and repurpose cast kitsch forms to explore the old genre of fables and tall tales though cast vignettes. I explore the forms and the archetypes of toys, tools, food, and religious knickknacks that speak to a domestic past. I enjoy working with these objects of the kitsch realms by amplifying them into a corrupted or grotesque state where I offer the viewer to be present in the moment of the micro narrative.
Bio
Originally, from the small oilfield town Levelland, Texas, Joel “Captain” Kiser is currently the District Art Labs Coordinator and associate Professor of Sculpture for Collin College. He holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Texas Tech University with a minor in Art History. He earned is Master of Fine Arts from Texas Christian University. Joel has studied the processes of casting metals and building furnaces throughout the United States by working with master casters such as Djean Jawrunner, Harry Geffert, Donnie Keen, Patrick Garley, and Kurt Dyrhaug and the Texas Atomic Iron Commission. Joel continues to develop his narrative castings and furnace building out of his studio in Plano, Texas.
