Artist Statement
Are people distancing themselves from nature because technology has interrupted how we connect with objects? I want my work to bridge the gap between people and nature, and reflect on the abstract qualities between organic material and human interaction. Creating ceramics is a gateway for imagination and emotion; it is a material I use to expresses narratives. I strive for my work to speak to me as well as the individuals who use it. Today, people manufacture ceramics more easily as technology develops. On the other hand, many people appreciate and find joy from looking and using original ceramic pieces that are made by hand. I am more intrigued in combining traditional methods of ceramics whilst using digital fabrication.
My recent works have had an idea based on a Korean tradition of images being stacked on each other, and being compressed. The piece is based more on sculpture than functionality, and the focus is on the space and surface. While it is still functional, I am trying to blur the lines between the two. The etching on the surface is my attempt at fusing the past and future together, using ceramics traditionally, and laser etching to use technology that we have now to add to that.
To breathe life into an inanimate object is an idea I seek to visualize. I am interested to transfer my thoughts into shape. I want to make an object from invisible to visible based on personal experiences. Formally, using organic lines and abstract forms hope to represent the duality between tangible and the intangible. For example, sorrow is a part of the installation describing the intricacies of the brain. Anger can affect how the heart pumps blood, and the veins and blood vessels fluctuating at different levels.
My work has primarily consisted of ceramics but I also have been experimented in sculpture and painting. This has made me more versatile, providing different methods, and this process has given me the ability to incorporate different ideas into my work.
