ARTIST STATEMENT
For the last few years, I have explored the theme of healing in my work. As an artist who came to the states six years ago from Korea, my work is influenced by my deep-rooted Korean culture as well as the challenges I came across living in the states. Learning a new language, navigating relationships, and adjusting to a new culture are all of the challenges that gave me an inspiration for new ideas and new direction in my work.
My Korean culture symbolizes minimalistic and aesthetic simplicity that creates sense of calmness. I have implemented the ideology of Taoism, which emphasizes the harmony with nature. I have incorporated the elements of nature with my perception of the world. The harmonious relationship between these two elements creates the sense of calmness and simplicity.
I went through various experimentations with different materials. The finished product you’re seeing embeds all of my experimentations. My work is about process. So I didn’t have a blue print to my finalized work. My work is both three-dimensional and two-dimensional. Therefore, my work can be viewed as both sculpture and a painting. They are installed on the ceiling, on the floor, and on the wall. This form of installation creates the interactive experience for the viewers.
In the series of healing, each material serves as a metaphorical expression. It represents the language of emotions. I combined visible materials such as wire mesh, cable ties, fabric, acrylic, holi powder, and spray paint. The use of variety of colors, organic forms, textures, light, and are the important elements in my work. When all of these elements came together, a new element emerged; shadows. Shadows reflect what’s beneath the surface and create a visual of unstable movements. The shadows refer to the languages that cannot be understood; my inner world.
The objects on the surface represent the process of healing. The entire process of sewing and connecting cable ties and covering them with fabric pieces and wire mesh represents the “treatment” of my scars and wounds. Wire mesh and cable ties are malleable, yet very durable. They represent “protection” against external harm during my healing process. The process I underwent to create my work is the process I underwent healing. While I was working on my piece, I was healing from the inside. My work reflects personal loss, vulnerability, and detachment, but also the expression of countless universal emotions. These elements led me to be intrigued by the process of healing.
