Jeremy Joel
A self-taught artist, Jeremy Joel, has been creating in Fort Worth for over a decade. Born in Denver, Colorado the Christmas of 82' his family moved between Houston, Fort Worth and Colorado throughout his life. Elements of his longing for the native landscape of Colorado are an intrinsic part of his instantly recognizable work.
Coupled with personal iconography his work creates a narrative reflecting his fascinating past and the denial of absolutes in his belief system. His recent work explores the technique of layering paint and shapes to tell a story while purposely obscuring specifically chosen portions until it is aesthetically aligned with Joel’s vision. Hiding portions of the piece create a real-life depiction of how memories and stories live in our minds and draw focus to what parts of the narrative the artist allows the viewer to see. Joel developed this technique and overall artistic style with an art career beginning more than a decade ago.
In 2007, Joel began creating work as part of the art collective F6. In 2009 his distinguishable murals began popping up throughout Fort Worth at businesses including CUT Hair Salon, Urban Outfitters, Spiral Diner, Daggett Montessori, Brik Venue, Inspiration Alley in The Foundry District and a three-part mural for FWISD. He soon transitioned to canvas work that reflected the iconic style of his murals. Driven by the need to create an inclusive space for artists in Fort Worth, Joel began hosting his own shows through partnerships with artists Diana Urbina and Jay Wilkinson. Following his part in "Apples" at Shipping & Receiving he, Jay Wilkinson, and Brandon Pederson created the Race Street gallery space Bobby on Drums where he curated several shows. In 2017 he continued the tradition of spotlighting local artists at SAM Gallery.
Jeremy Joel's work has shown at several galleries including Fort Works Art, The Grackle, Ro2, and SCOPE as part of Art Basel Miami. In 2018 Joel took part in a residency at Fort Works Art followed by a successful solo show entitled “A Beatbox Caviar.” He is currently the artist in residence at Mananaland where he curated the show “I’d Rather Be With You.”
His work is included in the personal collections of notable collectors including Brad Alford, the creators of Tax Collection, and Chris Sparks of the upcoming Bentonville, Arkansas gallery Fellow Human.
