jackson daughety: iPad baby
November 11 - December 16, 2023
Press Release
Ro2 Art is proud to present iPad Baby, an exhibition of new work by Kansas City-based artist Jackson Daughety. The exhibition will open November 11 and remain on view through December 16, 2023, at Ro2 Art Projects located at 1501 S. Ervay St., Dallas, TX, with an opening reception to be held November 11 from 7-10pm. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
In his exhibition iPad Baby, Jackson Daughety disrupts and questions the aesthetics of tech culture, finance, and digital propaganda through layered, luminous prints of reformulated found images. Mining from a variety of sources, including stock photography, advertisements, and video game graphics, Daughety edits, rearranges, and composes these images into subtly surreal prints of landscapes and cityscapes. Printed onto unprimed canvas and taken out of their everyday context, these works’ visuality is informed as much by the history of landscape painting as the politics of the tech industry and venture capitalist maneuverings of the late 2000s and 2010s. Through a combination of mechanical and manual processes, including the idiosyncrasies of printing and the laborious process of sewing, Daughety evokes a surprising sense of sincerity and humanity to the depersonalized subject matter. The exhibition iPad Baby creates a space for slyly subverting the expectations of media propaganda, offering the viewer a new way of engaging with the tropes of digital media content. |
artist Statement
I am interested in providing a subversive counter-discourse to the aesthetics and politics which have risen out of the dot com bubble and subsequent venture capitalist maneuverings of the late 2000s and 2010s. By reproducing or photographing images used by government-affiliated game developers, the “FAANG” tech companies, and other instances of digital propaganda, I want to allow for a more comprehensive analysis of media imagery. Through the printing process, artifacts and idiosyncrasies become a part of the composition, providing an ironic humanity to the subject matter. This acts to undermine the depersonalized authority of the tech world and suggest a more sincere and individualized perspective.
