Iris Liu

Bio

Iris Liu was born and raised in China and she moved with her family to the United States in 2007. Since then, she has started a formal art education. Liu is now a senior printmaking major at the University of North Texas. She started doing printmaking in spring 2015 and has loved it ever since. In 2016, she received the Jean Andrews Scholarship from the College of Visual Art and Design at UNT, as well as the CVAD creative project award for traveling to the Frogman’s Print Workshop in Nebraska, one of the nation’s top printmaking workshop. Printmaking has been an eye-opening journey for Iris Liu because of the range of possibilities it offers in its various processes. Moving forward, Liu is going to explore other creative processes, especially painting while focusing on printmaking. In 2017, Iris Liu will search for grad school where she will concentrate on drawing, painting and printmaking. Her goal is to become a professional studio artist.

Artist Statement

The question of self is the primary reason I am an artist. My artwork explores
the awareness of identity and the awakening of self on a personal and a social level. Born in China’s economic boom, the unprecedented social, economic and educational changes have challenged the sense of identity of every Chinese person. Suddenly, asking who I am and who we are become questions of profound importance and intense urgency, even though the question of self was rarely asked in traditional Chinese culture, nor was it relevant in China’s recent past communist belief. For the conscious minds, this is a time of rediscovering, reimagining and reconstructing the self after a long silence.
My works are expressions based on my personal experiences and observations; I draw inspirations from traditional Chinese cultural symbols, the contemporary life, and old folklores. A sense of playfulness can be found in many of my works, even when dealing with heavy subject matters.
