Hudel Smith
BIO
Pauline Hudel-Smith has 35 years of design, fine art and educational experience. Pauline received a Master of Fine Arts from Texas A & M and has held teaching positions at the University of Texas – Dallas, Collin and Richland Colleges as well as a University of North Texas teaching fellow. Select projects include a publication for the Dallas Museum of Art, design and concepts for The Dallas Opera ‘Nabucco’ and cover art and product development for the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. In addition, Pauline has exhibited her work in a number of juried, invitational and one person shows - Internationally China, Belgium, South Africa, Mexico, Italy and nationally San Francisco, Boulder, Chicago, Austin, Brooklyn, Wichita, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Saint Louis, Santa Fe, and Houston. Pauline has won numerous awards including multiple gold, silver and bronze awards from the United Design Alliance International Design Awards, a Grand Apex Award and an Apex Award of Excellence, a Platium and two Gold Hermes Creative Awards, a Light Bulb Award from the DSVC, a Special Judges Award - Best in Category and Gold Addy from the American Advertising Federation.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My current work is known as “Dissent” in design which is defined as political and socially driven graphics and is a direct reaction to the current national discourse. Assimilating art and design into the culture can create meaningful citizen engagement and encourage a sense of belonging in communities. My work concentrates on the catalytic role of art/design, how visual messages communicate
ideas and connect with audiences. Some of my posters are created as women’s protest posters, designed to give women a stronger visual voice in the women’s marches.
