artist statement
The Enigma paintings are part of a series to show this tension I feel in life. The tension of only seeing things in part while desiring to see the whole picture. By choosing to settling in this tension, I can then appreciate the beauty and mystery around me. There is something beautiful about being present in the moment that you are in, whatever it looks like, whatever angle you see, however uncomfortable it gets, there is something powerful in taking it all in. In this series, I have cropped close up images in a way that leave you slightly uncomfortable yet also in a way that is still beautiful. I used various monochromatic tones to convey a feeling that each person gives me. As I am currently experimenting with color and how it can influence our emotions, I felt I could express how a person feels by a single color choice. I also chose the small size of the paintings to add to the frustratingly beautiful tension and mystery.
