H Schenck is an artist working in the DFW area. H uses mud, both physically as a material and conceptually as a vehicle, to acknowledge social labels and redefine them. His work consists of site specific installations that reflect different points of the Mud Philosophy.
Mud is essentially made up of four materials. The ratio of these materials changes the mud's properties and the given name, such as cement or clay. Similar to mud and its specific uses, humans are all composed of the same genetic material; however, the individual make up of our genes, such as the amount of melatonin in our skin, determines our social labels.
By utilizing mud as a base unit, H talks about individual navigation and experience that can speak to a larger audience beyond his own specific social categories.
With this understanding, H Schenck has revolved his process and work around the idea that he is mud, what he makes is mud, the people around him are mud, and we are all connected. He has collected soil samples throughout the Midwest, from Texas to Wisconsin. The majority of H’s work reflects images and materials from these regions, based on his specific “mud” travels.
