Erin Hinz
In my work, I seek to explore themes of identity, specifically sexual subjectivity, gender, and feminism. Philosopher of gender and sexuality, Judith Butler, and many third wave feminists challenge the notion of a shared conception of gender and instead propose that identity is a matrix of codes or styles, fraught with contradiction and variation. While some feminists may share similar political battles against sexism, racism, and classism; internal conflicts, such as understanding one’s body, gender, and sexuality, become far more ambiguous and disparate. The significance of this discourse for my work is simply that a sense of entitlement of one’s body, including one’s sexuality and bodily pleasure, as a right, can serve as a standard for the capacity to know and demand other rights.
My work focuses on what this sense of bodily entitlement might look like. In an effort to do that, I depict the female body as a site for euphoric physical and psychological self pleasure, a body unencumbered by oppressive hierarchies and cultural categories having to do with granting others sexual access to that body. The painting’s psychedelic, hallucinatory spaces, created by a spectrum of painting techniques, are intended as a way of picturing a psychological state or an interior experience as opposed to describing culturally defined dichotomous notions of female sexuality. In the end, I strive to navigate a sense of being where perceived forms of gender are always already constructed and cultural permission is unevenly allocated.
