(Dallas, TX) Ro2 Art is pleased to welcome artist Eliana Miranda for her exhibition, Depraved Documentations, on view March 11 -24, 2015, with the opening reception taking place Friday, March 13 from 7-9pm Depraved Documentations will be on view at Ro2 Art Downtown, located at 110 N. Akard Street, in the historic Kirby Building of Downtown Dallas. This exhibition is presented in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts in Art at the University of Dallas in 2015.
Artist Statement: Depraved Documentations
“My work explores the current United States / Mexico border dilemma and the negative undertones within its portrayal in American media. I am inspired by the imagery that appears in newspapers such as the New York Times and various internet news including NBC, CNN and Fox. When addressing the immigration issues, the media's imagery of undocumented people tends to dehumanize. Accumulation of clothing and trash is often used to symbolize undocumented people and has the potential to exacerbate the tensions among the America public.
“As a way to highlight the negative undertones in these images, the process of drawing and painting become key. Often, immigrants are not treated like individuals but rather generalized as a mass of people. In my work, vivid colors and the sketched line become mechanisms for emphasizing stereotypes. Since news images are perceived to be a factual documentation of an event, it is important to recognize the bias inherent in any media source, and I hope my work helps to reveal these prejudices.
“Although I am dealing with the United States / Mexico border in this exhibition, I hope to open a dialogue about a universal analysis of borders, immigration and the social repercussions of treating undocumented people in an unjust manner.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Eliana Miranda is a Texas- based artist focusing on the exploration of news, and media's portrayal of current social issues. She uses various sources such as blogs, Documentations, personal stories, images, internet articles and newspapers. Eliana currently lives and makes paintings in Texas. She has completed her BA at Hamilton College in Clinton New York, where she was awarded the J. Barney Moore Prize and the Alfred Bohn Prize in Studio Art.
Since receiving her MA at the University of Dallas in 2012, Eliana has participated in numerous group exhibitions around Dallas. She is currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Dallas, this exhibition is presented in partial fulfillment of the Master or Fine Arts at the University of Dallas in 2015.
