Eliana Miranda
Eliana Miranda is a native Texan who currently lives and makes paintings in Dallas. In 2010, she completed her BA from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Miranda’s BA thesis exhibition awarded her the J. Barney Moore Prize and the Emily and Alfred Bohn Prize in Studio Art. She obtained her MA in 2012 and an MFA in 2015 from the University of Dallas. Miranda’s work is an exploration of the news media’s portrayal of current social issues. She uses various sources such as, blogs, documentaries, personal stories, images, and newspaper and Internet articles. By interpreting these topics through her own visual vocabulary, she hopes to reveal the negative undertones in the news media and open these issues to a wider discussion.
Artist Statement
My work explores the environmental impact on human migration. Ecological disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, major flooding and so forth are some of the instances that can lead to vast migration. Currently my work investigates American culture as one of the leading causes for these catastrophic events. From cheap clothing to pre-packed meals we are constantly encouraged to buy, consume then dispose because products are convenient and cheap to buy again. Eventually this creates an excess amount of waste that leads to environmental hazards. As a way to highlight environmental damage, the process of drawing and painting became key. In my work I use color and line as mechanisms for emphasizing consumption and destruction. I use vivid colors to entice the viewer like advertisements entice the consumer. My purpose is to highlight environmental damage and the displacement it will inevitably cause for many. Hopefully, my work will provide a platform that will open these issues to a wider discussion.
