Doug LandDoug Land, has been showing work around the US since 2008. For the past three years he has been focused on using recycled materials and modern technology to understand our place in the natural world. But what does that mean?
“I think that I can never escape my old skin as an illustrator. I am a sculptor yet, I still find myself telling complex stories with these effigies. My sculptures mimic Nature. I take direct inspiration from the insects, bones, roots and rocks that I find on the ground as I hike. Yet the characters of my stories seem to be Mankind, and the legacy we have created. Right now we are at a technological zenith, and I am struggling to find direct ways of integrating all this technology into my sculptures, while still representing my love of Nature. In this moment, I have turned technology into my apprentice. This pupil does the heavy lifting so that I can make more art. Perhaps tomorrow I will train the apprentice to sculpt for me too. But will this robot assistant care about the bugs on the ground, or the birds overhead? With all our advancement, will we care either? ” |
