Cynthia Giron
Cynthia Giron, born in Houston, TX, is a Drawing/Painting MFA candidate at the University of North Texas, she plans to graduate Dec. 2019. She is an artist exploring the concept of the duality of growing up with two cultures and identity as a first generation American. Being brought up with two cultures creates a feeling of isolation and displacement. As a child of immigrants from El Salvador, she explores the 'place in between' these two different cultures and brings a personal perspective into the struggles of merging two cultures together.
In her work, she creates 'things' or 'creatures' that are like her, are in a in between place, they combine recognizable shapes with colorful abstract elements. Play and fun are strong influencers in her work, they recall a childhood nostalgia, of finding her identity through creating art. She creates games, that she plays while working, this keeps the work, fresh and unknown, making her make choices she normally wouldn’t. Fun and play are strong influencers in her work, they recall a childhood nostalgia, of finding her identity through creating art. Her work is comprised of paintings on canvas and paper, drawings, books and zines, working with an assorted of media such as acrylic, airbrush, markers, collage and vinyl paper to create her 2D work. She has held residency at SCRAP Denton and participated in classes at the Glassell School of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Arts League in Houston, Texas.
