Artist Statement
Occasionally I've set out to paint something ordinary, or even ugly. That hasn’t worked out for me. The beauty and power of the ordinary seems irrepressible. Chekhov certainly knew this in literature. In painting, my early guides have been those realists, such as Eakins and Bellows, who broadened my conception of art’s subject matter. My own paintings are meant to capture people in moments that open to something more than the surface details of their lives.
