ABOUT THE ARTIST

Chris Rijk (1995, NL) is an artist masquerading as a craftsman. He finished his BA in Fine Arts in 2017, and in 2020 he was artist in residence at the European Ceramics Workcenter (EKWC). Rijk’s work is part of public and private collections around the world, and he lives and works in Amsterdam. He doesn’t have any pets.

ARTIST STATEMENT

If you thought Chris Rijk’s work looks like your boring auntie’s collection of equally boring crockery, then think again. For does she like butt fucking? Does she like sweaty armpits and dick cheese? The smell of underwear worn too long? Probably not, but Rijk does, as evidenced by his work.
He likes to claim, however, those works are layered documents of these ‘fleeting and ever so incomprehensible times’ but in actual fact it is about masculinity and his much lamented lack thereof. It is about the man he wished to be (tall, beefy, muscled, hairy, bearded, tattooed and with a low voice) but isn’t (namely a potter). |
