ARTIST STATEMENT
The Chimera series is a group of four watercolors I painted specifically for the Ro2Art Chaos show. It includes four small butterfly paintings on a clean white background reminiscent of specimens in an entomological collection. The butterflies themselves are based on insects with the rare condition “bilateral gynandromorphism” which presents as an organism having physical characteristics of both male and female, one on either side of the form. The contrasts between some male and female butterflies are visually dramatic and create a striking and unique image when merged.
At its core my work is about “life”; Defined as: a principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings. My work is not just about human life but all life. I am especially interested in the delicate nature of life, its brevity and fragility. I hope to capture some of the delicacy and impermanence of life within my work; I feel that (because of their fragile forms) flowers and insects express this well. |
