anthony reans: eyes in motion
September 30 - November 4, 2023
Press Release
Ro2 Art is proud to present Eyes in Motion, an exhibition of new work by Anthony Reans. The exhibition will open September 30 and remain on view through November 4, 2023, at Ro2 Art Projects located at 1501 S Ervay St., Dallas, TX, with an opening reception to be held September 30 from 7-10pm.
In his exhibition Eyes in Motion, Anthony Reans engages with Op Art through stripe paintings that are both whimsical and rigidly geometrical. Reans creates various types of movement and moods through different patterns of tightly constructed lines. Vivid colors heighten the sense of shifting perspectives, while also imbuing the works with a tongue-in-cheek light-heartedness. For Reans, his practice is both precise and intuitive. He begins his paintings with schematic lines that are then built up more instinctively with an imaginative use of color. Throughout Eyes in Motion, the paintings captivate with a striking balance between their incredibly precise technique and playfully surprising spontaneity. |
artist Statement
I've committed over twenty years to my creative practice, and whatever I’ve made, I’ve always looked for new ways of balancing calculated precision with expressive unpredictability. It’s a thread running through everything I’ve created. For the past few years, I’ve been using an Op Art/Color Field approach, which deals with the nature of subjective reality and perception; the work often incorporates illusions that change depending on the observer’s location and distance from the surface. This interconnectedness of spatial relations interests me in terms of reaching the observer, and to work within rules and restrictions (like using nothing but straight lines or geometric shapes) creates a rewarding artistic challenge, since I’m also trying to interject a sense of spontaneity.
I’ll start each piece with a rough idea of the effect I want to achieve, or the color palette, or the overall composition, and then begin an intuitive process of painting and solving problems as I go. Leaving many of the important choices to be made along the way is the best method for allowing me to improvise within the confines I’ve set up for myself. I love how there’s a sense of mystery all the way up to the end. The work is only finished when there’s balance, tension, and (at least a little) playfulness. |
