Artist Angel Cabrales combines science fiction iconography with contemporary immigration issues, drawing from inhumane and unjust actions committed at the border by the US Government. In Tequila Sci Fi, Cabrales alters the narrative of classical Mexpolitation movies, where Mexican life was typically portrayed alongside crime, drugs, and sex, to a focus on the dehumanization of migrants. |
ARTIST STATEMENT
|
Taking elements from Mexploitation movies and Science Fiction Dystopias, ChupaCabrales presents Tequila Sci Fi. Blending the images of classic science fiction with current immigration issues, Cabrales draws narratives on the inhumane and unjust actions on the border from our current administration. While classic Mexploitation movies were known for portrayals of Mexican life which usually dealt with crime, drug trafficking, money and sex, Angel moves to change the narrative focusing on the dehumanization of migrants as the main emphasis and couples it into the science fiction genre. Sci Fi has served as a useful tool to engage views in discussions of sensitive topics while avoiding controversy. It has hidden its social commentary as warnings of unwanted futures or worlds through dystopic storylines. Cabrales does not want to hide the subject matter, but rather draw out those who would rather avoid the subject and bring them into the conversation.
