Biography
Amber O'Dell was born in Lancaster, Texas in 1987. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 2005. Amber grew up in the world of performance art, training in classical ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, and hip hop dance beginning at age two. After high school graduation, she crossed over into the world of ballroom and latin dance, where she worked competitively, and still continues to teach free lance. Having a background in performance has been very helpful in learning the dance of glassblowing; in having the ability to connect and identify with the fluidity of the material in its molten state.
She now prefers to work in the realm of intermedia art rather than work exclusively in glass. Amber O'Dell is an alumni of the Salzburg Global Seminar. She received a first place prize in the student exhibition at 500x Gallery. She graduated with her Bachelors Degree of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Arlington in May 2015, receiving the Outstanding Senior award from the Glass Department.
Artist Statement
The concepts behind my artwork often reflect my suspicious attitude towards social norms and the modern condition. I draw inspiration from current events and the ideologies of our ever-changing, quick paced society. My work is a commentary on the oddities and misconceptions of the seemingly "sub"culture of modern pornography. Oftentimes, I use humor and satire as a means to shed light on these somewhat taboo topics. My intention is to bring the privacy aspect of viewing pornography out into the open, public eye.
Working with glass, mixed media, vibrating motors, and video allows me to explore this vast and ever-expanding industry. I am also interested in the impact that pornography has on our society, whether it be sexual expectations, desensitization, addiction to viewing pornography, or the influence it has on gender roles.
