Artist Statement: Living Color
Picasso once “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” I have always agreed with that. A so-called color scheme... is just that, a scheme, but not necessarily art. I use a variety of media in my work: watercolor, acrylic, car paint, fluorescent street marking, rattle-can paint, epoxy resin, and nail polish. I'm exploring photoshopped images, digital printing, and combinations of each with painting. The color possibilities are unlimited.
Ron Criswell has been an artist virtually all his life, growing up in Wichita Falls, TX, art was always his primary focus in school. He started out in Dallas after earning a degree from the Dallas Art Institute, working for years as an illustrator in Dallas, with representation in Chicago. Criswell worked with clients such as United Airlines, Belo, McLendon Broadcasting, Dr. Pepper, and Bloom – winning awards locally and on the national stage.
Through the years, he continued to study painting, printmaking, and photography under Robin Koch, David Newman, and Don Taylor, being in included in numerous group in Dallas and El Paso,, and San Francisco – garnering several awards. Criswell has presented solo shows at The Plano Art Centre and The Langdon Center in Granbury, Texas.
Ron Criswell has learned wood-working and furniture design, and has taught himself to use various saws and tools (thankfully keeping all ten fingers). After purchasing a gas welding rig, he looks forward to experimenting with metal sculpture and furniture design.
