Artist Statement
Through the concepts of home, travel, and the language of interiors, I explore the human relationship with the built environment. We anthropomorphize spaces, clothing them in wallpaper, moldings, curtains and flooring surfaces. We manipulate and decorate space to communicate identity, status and control our interactions with architecture. My work plays with the theatricality of the built environments we create for public presentation versus the private interiors we create for ourselves.
I explore the layers of cultural and personal meaning that shape our relationship with and behavior within the man-made landscape. Through architectural interventions, installations and interactive projects, I investigate our embodied perception of space: its lived, perceived and conceived experience. Buildings and places are occupied in memory, dreams and imagination. We construct spatial meaning collectively; our cities, neighborhoods and buildings reflect our personal, cultural and political histories and imaginaries.
I am experimenting with the possibilities for aesthetic experience through navigation, narrative cartography and controlled disorientation. Getting lost allows us to see our surroundings with fresh eyes, challenges us to connect with the unfamiliar and has the power to transform our perception of our communities, spaces, and selves.
